CMJ 2006

Well! I just realized that I completely neglected to share the fact that I again worked for (and attended) the CMJ 2006 Music Marathon. It was later and longer than last year (Oct 31-Nov 4). Now, this year I was a volunteer, so I had shifts I had to work and couldn't do whatever I wanted like last year, but it was still a good time. I worked Showcase Registration with my old bosses, Matt and Pete (Chris left CMJ) and met a bunch of really cool people. Unfortunately, it coincided with a week that I got really, really sick and had a few papers and an Opera to attend, so I didn't end up getting to go to (pretty much) anything. But! I did go see George Clinton!

He was listed as going on at 1130. Me, Michael, Neal and Jeremy got there at 1130 and the opening band, Drugs, was still playing. They were cool, but we were all tired. Neal said they sounded like Gov't Mule... not that I know what Gov't Mule sounds like at all, but I'll take his word on that. They played for about an hour and a half or so, then the set up came and took entirely too long. Then the 420 Funk Mob came out and no George Clinton! He didn't come out until 2:30. In the morning! I think he was taking a nap. He played for about 15 minutes. Then he came out to do an encore (Flashlight) and we had to leave. We were tired. It was freezing but we walked to the subway and managed to get a train (from wayyy down the island) and we got home about at about 4.

The next day Marla and I went to the Pure Volume/free bands/free everything party. It was a good time, and we were even smart enough to leave early so that we could get on the subway. But then we ran into this crazy Canadian and we had to go to the Moondance Diner to get him directions. Then it was 4:00 AM. We had to take a cab back.

Other than that, all my CMJ experience was working the desk as a volunteer. I got to see some cool people up close (Chuck D, George Clinton) because of panels, and the whole experience was pretty fun. Pete said I'm welcome any time and you better believe I'll be taking him up on that. Watch out CMJ 2007.
